Turmeric (Curcuma longa, also
known as tumeric) known as HALDI in Hindi, punjabi and Urdu.
Turmeric is a member of the Ginger family. This
is a spice which is always used in Indian curries and other South Asian cooking.
In Japan it is also used in tea.
It has an active ingredient called curcumin.
Curcumin is known for its antitumor, antioxidant, anti-amyloid and
anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric has many healthful properties.
Sangli, Maharashtra is the largest producer of
turmeric in Asia.
Medicinal use
The medicinal properties of the tumeric have
for millennia been known to the ancient Indians and its medical properties have
been expounded in the Ayurvedic texts. It is only in recent years that Western
scientists have increasingly recognised the medicinal properties of tumeric.
- Recent studies have shown that turmeric can
be effective in fighting a number of STDs including chlamydia and
gonorrhea.
- Anti-tumoral effects against melanoma cells.
- Slows the breast cancer
- It has beneficial effects in Alzheimer's
disease, cancer and liver disorders.
- Curcumin is known for its antitumor,
antioxidant, anti-amyloid and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Using Turmeric while cooking meat kills the
germs present in the meat.
Cosmetic use
- Turmeric is currently used in the
formulation of some sun screens.
- Turmeric paste is used by Indian women to
keep them free of superfluous hair and for glowing skin.
I have found Haldi as an excellent treatment for Gout pain. If you have a gout pain then take half teaspoon of Haldi with water at night. It is considered a good way to help clear the liver of all the toxins.
