The facts you are about to read are taken from the book Hundred Facts about Eggs by Dr. Nemi Chand.

* Eggs are meant for reproduction. Nature has not intended them to be consumed by man as food. He is already facing the consequences of going against the nature. Soon he shall have to face the consequences of eating eggs also.

* Eggs of all birds are structurally alike (See the McDonald Encyclopedia of Birds of the World, Page 30-31). Their internal structure is meant for reproduction of progeny and not for human consumption. By eating eggs, man has reverted to the hunting stage of his civilization. He is meddling both with nature and with the reproductive system.

* The egg is totally forbidden for those who believe in non-violence. Right from the rearing of hens to the hatching of their eggs, there is violence all over. A visit to any poultry farm will support this fact. In poultry farms, hens are considered no better than egg-producing machines. They are confined to a narrow space of 15" x 19" in the midst of several hardships and tensions that are naturally passed on to the blood and system of those who eat their eggs and turn them into imbalance personalities.

* In a poultry farm each hen gets about 15” X 19” i.e. 2 sq. ft. space to live in. Being compelled to live in such a congested place, hens begin to assault one another in their struggle for existence, they wound and make one another bleed, by their beaks. Gujarat poultry owners have been therefore advised by their government (see their Murgha Palan) to debeak the hens and to crop their feathers so that maximum number of hens can be accommodated in the small space available for them. Does it not create in them tension, a tendency to retaliate by violence, helplessness and irritation? Are not these attitudes bound to creep in men who eat their eggs?

* Chickens are housed in small-congested cages known as chicken havens. Due to shortage of space, they naturally become violent, offensive, obsessed and quarrelsome. They attack one another in a barbarous manner. So they are de-beaked. Due to de-beaking, they are unable even to drink water. Do we not realize the cause of our present widespread complexes, aggressiveness and suffering in the chicken-havens?

* As mentioned earlier, hens are de-beaked to prevent them from fighting and wounding one another. The de-beaking is done in brown light, especially during the night when hens become almost blind. The lower beak is cut. If any mistake is made, the hen is deprived of food for the rest of her life. The hen has to starve at least for three days due to the wounded beak. Wouldn't this act of cruelty affect the egg-eater?

* Hens are given five kinds of violent-generating foods: bone meal, blood-meal, excreta-food, meat-meal and fish-meal. Can we dare to call eggs vegetarian food even after learning this?

* The term vegetarian egg is a first-rate misnomer. The purpose of a fertile egg is to animate life, but an infertile egg has no such purpose and as such should be considered totally inedible. Battery and factory eggs are harmful to health. It is better that we abstain ourselves from eating them.

* The egg produced without any contact with the male bird (and thus producing an infertile egg) is also animate because it is born out of the hen's body with its blood and cells. Therefore, its consumption is 100% non-vegetarian.

* Even if the egg is in the form of a female-seed, there is life in it because it is born out of the living cells present in the body of the hens.

* If we take a small piece of a leaf of lime tree, we find that it has the potentiality of developing into a full tree, other things remaining the same. Similarly any cell from the body of a hen can lead to reproduction of hen.

* According to the famous American scientist Mr. Philip J. Scamble, no egg is without life in it. The scientists at Michigan University in America have proven it beyond doubt that no egg - fertile or infertile - is without life (inanimate).

* Whether the egg is fertile or infertile life is essentially there and it has all symptoms of life like respiration, brain and feeding ability etc.

* Only fertile egg is animate is a wrong notion. In fact, every egg which has symptoms of life is animate. Infertile egg cannot therefore be called dead.

* The hen gives infertile eggs during the absence of the male bird. But it has been observed that she gives an infertile egg before the day of contact with the male bird - and also the next day. In other words, she can give a fertile egg even without contact with a male bird. On the fifth day, again she gives a fertile egg. This means that the semen of the male bird remains lying in her body for a considerable duration. In some cases, this duration has been observed to be as long as even six months.

* A fertilized egg is a pre-birth stage of a chicken; unfertilized eggs are the result of the sexual cycle of a hen and very unnatural. Both are non-vegetarian food. Victoria Moran, the author of the book Compassion: The Ultimate Ethics says, to eat fertilized egg is in fact to consume a chicken before its birth (The Ethic on borderline). I was told that an unfertilized egg is the product of a bird's sexual cycle and can hardly be regarded as natural food for Man.(page 43).

* There are 15,000 porous-breathing holes on the shell, the cover of the egg.

* The egg begins to rot at a temperature of less than 8^ Celsius, 00^ Fahrenheit. When it begins to rot, its rotting manifests itself through evaporation of the water content. The egg becomes infected by disease-germs and thus becomes diseased. The progress of the rotting soon reaches the shell of the egg.

* Horrible greed for money is at work behind the business of chickens and eggs. In fact these things are produced not so much to promote human health as for exploitation, cruelty and illness. Chickens and eggs have become the medium of the growing violence and cruelty.

* A. C. Campbell Rogers in his book, Profitable Poultry Keeping in India and the East has said (page 110) that hens do not give eggs till they are given animal protein. Hence it is necessary to give them blood, bone, meat and fish to eat. These take the form of Sundi, earth worms, snails and such other worms. They can eat caterpillars and grasshoppers also but they are not easily available in India. Poultries all over India give this violence-generating food to hens. Can we still call the egg to be vegetarian? To quote Rogers, “you may say roughly, no animal protein, no eggs. The point about blood, bone, meat and fish meals is that they are animal proteins and take the place of worms, slugs and other insects such as grasshoppers and caterpillars which are not found in the earth. The protein contained in pulses, peas and beans is not animal protein and does not take the place of insects.”

* The eight-weak old chicken is given a diet known as ‘starter-mash’. It comprises of Lysin-protein which is an essential ingredient of their food. Lysin food must consist of 10 percent fish and 6 to 7 percent powdered meat. Can we still call egg-culture (a term that does not go well with Indian culture) to be non-violent and eggs to be vegetarian?

* Chickens are hyper-sensitive to light. Light controls and regulates their physical growth. For the first two weeks for all the twenty four hours they are placed in chicken heavens (windowless warehouses) full of piercing and bright light so that the chickens almost become insane. To quite them becomes difficult. There being no ventilator in the chicken heavens, the chickens are compelled to live in a society where fighting, enmity, complexes, discontent, quarrelling, aggression, darkness are the chief things. Can we not see the face of our society reflected in the chicken heavens?

* We really don’t know what we actually eat in the name of eggs. We eat eggs of such hens which are tortured, terrorized, exploited, sick, deprived of affection, helpless and dumb. This production is meant not so much for stomach (to satisfy hunger), its for taste only. The poultry-industry in America these days is fighting out the problem of flavorless chickens. In order to add a special flavor to eggs the hens are being given special injections. Agro-tech hatcheries in India are also following the same line.

* Poultries have a social aspect too. The anti-social atmosphere they foster is beyond imagination. Hens are cut off from their natural habitat and put in a cruel, lonely, inhuman, anti-social, sick, commercial atmosphere. We seem to be establishing lunatic asylums instead of poultries. These asylums multiply soon. In our country we are dislodging non-violence and compassion by replacing violence and cruelty in their place by way of opening poultries.

* Perhaps you do not know that when chickens die in poultry, their bodies are dried by heating them after half-an hour of their death. Then the bodies are powdered and served to other hens as poultry feed.

* How can the hens which eat their own night-soil, powder of their dead young ones and dirty, rotten food, ever give nourishing eggs?

Health Related Facts About Eggs By Nemi Chand.

* Eggs contain cholesterol in large quantities. The yellow bulk of the egg is the major source of cholesterol. Cholesterol narrows down the arteries and may eventually lead to a heart attack or to paralysis.

* Excess cholesterol gets deposited in the layers of skin, tendens and veins. As a result the person eating eggs becomes a patient of Xanthoma, a terrible disease.

* Excess of cholesterol in the body may cause hyper-cholesterolemia which in due course, may take the form of blood-pressure problem. The egg is not at all, congenial to children.

* Dr. M. G. Marmot of California University has, through his study of Japanese people living in different parts of world, found out the rate of heart-diseases among them. According to his findings, saturated fats and cholesterol are closely inter-related to death and heart-diseases.

* The University of Minnesota (School of Public Health) in America have undertaken a study of 12,000 people from Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Japan, Italy and America etc. they have given an account of the evil effects of egg-eating on human health. They mention that a person even with normal cholesterol level should abstain himself from eating eggs.

* Dr. Mark Armstrong of Lowa University, America, and his associates gave nourishing food rich with eggyolk to one group of monkeys. Consequently, their ventries became slow and blocked and showed symptoms of Atherosclerosis. This was exhibited through cine-angigraphy. On giving a cholesterol free diet for 18 months, the monkeys were re-examined and a surprising improvement was found in them.

* There is neither batch number nor date of manufacturing on eggs being sold in the market. To know this is difficult. It has been observed that eggs being sold on four-wheelers and ordinary shops get spoiled within two three days. Doctors tell us that 100 grams weight of eggs has 500 mg cholesterol which gives birth to different kinds of abdominal diseases.

* The hens in the poultry-farm are administered several kinds of medicines which are injurious to human health. A considerable part of these is consumed by man by way of eating eggs. Eggs have been found containing a poison like D.D.T. also and no man eating egg can escape its bad effect.

* Besides Salmonella (the oft-discussed bacterium), a new microbe (campylobacter) is also found in egg which may cause horrible diseases in the intestines.

* Eating eggs weakens human body. It also affects the intellectual and emotional growth. The effects of giving eggs to children as food become manifest during their youth and old age.

* Eating eggs may also lead to rheumatism and gout that can cause serious and painful joints in old age.

* Eggs contain no carbohydrates. Person eating egg may soon suffer from constipation and rheumatism.

* Eggs cause cough and imbalance of the nourishing elements present in the body.

* According to a survey now-a-days more than 1000 medicines and chemicals are being used in every poultry-farm. These medicines and chemicals enter human body as a result of eating eggs. They form a base for many incurable diseases.

* The elemental structure of egg is rather imbalanced. This can affect our digestive system by way of putrefaction any time. This danger is ever present in eating eggs.

* Eggs contain Salmonella Entritise, phase Type-4, Bacterium (P.T.4) is related to battery, factory or poultry eggs. In 1998, this bacterium claimed the lives of more than 1600 persons in England and Wales. The British government had to destroy 40 crores eggs and nearly 4 million hens. The capital cost of these was estimated to be one crore and nine millions then.

* The notion that on boiling an egg for five minutes solmonella bacteria get destroyed has been proved wrong. Experiments in America have shown that solmonella bacteria remain alive even after eight minute long boiling of the egg.

* Dr. V. Talwar, Prof. of Micro-biology, has cautioned people that eggs eaten raw or in ice-cream, cause several diseases. Dr. T. K. Kaushik, Research Officer of Haryana Agricultural University has concluded that Gentamycin can control the death-rate in poultries but its indiscriminate use may develop immunity among the chickens and the effect of the medicine on them is lost. Dr. Kaushik mentions that use of Gentamycin in the treatment of Salmonella Bacteria is very unscientific. The chickens may be cured but they remain carriers of Salmonella germs and Gentamycin. This medicine reaches the body of human beings through the eggs and flesh they consume and can take a disastrous turn. A German scientists study group which recently visited India has confirmed the presence od Salmonella in the poultries.

* In the poultry-farm hens do not get sufficient fresh air, proper sunlight, freedom of movement and cheerfulness. Therefore, they become badly upset and suffer from complexes. These complexes naturally enter into the system of a person who eats them and cause mental disorders.

* Egg eating may be conductive to cancer of large intestines. It should be noted that eggs have no dietary fibers and hence they are harmful to health.

* Hopkins Institute of Bombay has reached the conclusion that as food are harmful. They develop hyper-acidity. Till last few years egg was considered digestive but now according to new findings it is no longer considered digestive. Therefore, to feed children with eggs is not free from danger.

* Eggs often produce animal hyper sensitivity. As a result the person eating eggs becomes a victim of violent habits and gets involved in the anti-social activities.

* Egg as food is artificial. It is not meant for human consumption as its consumption leads to heterogeneous and unnatural development of his personality. It is no longer put in the list of nourishing food in the West. In the opinion of diet-experts of the West, eggs neither promote health nor protest it.

* Basically man is ‘mind’ and not ‘belly’. Various studies have shown that the egg-eating person develops a tendency toward dictatorship, lawlessness and immodesty. Riots, murders and such other upheavals are the consequences of non-vegetarian food.

* According to the famous burinist of London Mrs. K. Calleny eating egg is worse than eating meat because it is very sticky and causes constipation.

* According to the scientists like Shyam Sundaran, Sadgopalan and Panda of Ijatnagar Central Auian Research Institute, the use of Soya-cakes reduces the amount of iodine in hens causing Goitre etc., besides affecting their production. Don’t these deficiencies become a part of man’s metabolism on eating eggs?

* Chickens are by nature very social but they are packed in thousands in a small space. Consequently, they become petulant (irritated), aggressive, obsessive and almost abnormal. To overcome this excited and discontented state of theirs they are given various tranquilizers. Do they not reach the blood and system of the person who eats meat and egg?

* Hopkin Institute of Bombay is of the opinion that eggs can give birth to scores of diseases in children. Eggs are a sensitive source of hyper-acidity. The digestive system of children is too delicate to digest eggs properly. As such they should never be given eggs or egg-mixed things like cake, omelet, ice-creams and biscuits etc.

* The diet that chickens get today is not natural food. It is produced in the laboratories. Poultry industry cannot survive even for a moment without antibiotics. In fact, American chickens (and now Indian too), keep alive from the first day to the last on antibiotics only.

* More than ninety percent chickens are administered arsenic compounds. They are given sulpha drugs and nitrofurazon (antibacterial agents) also. Do you think they have no harmful effect on meat and egg-eaters?

* Animal factories are being opened through out India, where hens are reproduced to egg producing machine only. There is nothing natural in this process. On the contrary it has all the evils of the processed food. Processed production has proved harmful to human health.

* The feathers of chickens are a big problem that creates embarrassing situation for the watchman. According to the Poultry Digest, chickens give a long scream while flying skyward and are dead the moment they fall down. Experts have called it a ‘flip-over syndrome’. Post mortem reports have pointed out that there are stains of blood on their heart which are symptomatic of the torture they are made to suffer in life. Doesn’t this blood get mixed with the blood of those who eat meat and eggs?

* Human body is incapable of fully digesting protein contained in eggs, meat and fish. Infact, our observations on protein-diet are based on the experiments carried out on rats. The excess protein ultimately gets deposited in the muscles of human body and affects their flexibility. They develop rigidity. This is responsible for cesarean births also. Eating eggs weakens nerves, slows down the pace of blood-circulation and affects the working of heart, lowering the pace of heartbeats.

* Dr. Robert Gross (Britain) has warned people that there is avidin in the white bulk of the egg which can lead to leprosy, eczema, paralysis, skin-diseases, skin-cancer and other allergies.

Nutrition Facts about Eggs By Dr. Nemichand

* One egg (50 gms) gives 86.5 calories whereas the same quantity of wheat flour gives 176.5 calories (energy).

* Calcium, an indispensable substance for teeth, bones and ribs, is found in a negligible quantity in eggs. Doctors, therefore, prefer milk to eggs. Milk is complete food; it is digestive as well as essential for the development of body. Doctors therefore seldom recommend eggs as food.

* Eggs are not special source of calcium. One egg contains 30mg calcium whereas 75 gms of mustard leaves contain 30mg calcium and its cost is just 15paise.

* Eggs are not instant energy food. Sugar and starch are so.

* eggs contains 13.3% protein whereas green-gram, groundnut and soyabean contain 24%, 31.5% and 43.2% protein respectively.

* To say that milk and egg are alike in vitamins is a big mistake. B2, B12 and calcium are not found so considerably in eggs as they are in milk.

* In the process of boiling or frying egg, vitamin B1 (thiamin) gets destroyed. 25% of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) also gets destroyed. Vitamin B12 is also partly affected.

* It is often complained that the Indian vegetarian food is very deficient in iron, iodine and vitamin A. remember that egg is not a rich source of any of these. As compared to egg, spinach is a greater source of vitamin A. moreover, spinach is 25 times cheaper than egg.

* If we compare coriander and eggs together to see which is more energetic, we find that in eggs (100 gm), there is 13.3 gm protein, 13.3 gm fat, 1 gm mineral salt, 0.06 gm calcium, no carbohydrates, 0.22 gm phosphorous, 2.1 gm iron and can supply 173 calories, whereas 100gm coriander contains 14.1 gm protein, 16.1 gm fats, 4.4 gm mineral salt, 0.63 gm calcium, 21.6 gm carbohydrates, 0.37 gm phosphorous, 17.9 gm iron and supplies 288 calories.

* On comparing egg with fenugreek (the aromatic seeds of a leguminous plant. Use: in medicine, food flavoring.) we learn that the egg (100 gms) contains 13.3 gms of protein while fenugreek contains 26.2 gms of protein. Similarly on using egg and fenugreek of equal weight, we get 173 and 333 calories respectively. Fenugreek drains off cholesterol whereas the egg increases it.

* Comparing together egg and groundnuts we find that the amount of protein present in them is 13.3 and 31.5 Gms per 100 gms respectively. Evidently eggs are poorer source of protein. Similarly, eggs give only 173 calories as compared to 459 calories given by groundnuts.

* As compared to egg, lentil is richer in protein. As against the 13.3 Gms protein in eggs lentil has 25.1 Gms protein. The egg has no carbohydrates. Lentil has 59.7 Gms carbohydrates. We get 346 calories from lentil as against 173 calories from egg.

* For several decades protein was traditionally classified as first quality and second quality. Accordingly it was believed that protein obtained from meat, egg, milk etc. was considered to be of first class quality and protein obtained from vegetables was considered second class quality. Such argument against the most natural and healthy food had to be given up ultimately. Now proteins are recommended in view of their individual usefulness. It is a false belief that eggs contain first quality proteins.

* Tuwar (red-grams) gram, chowla, urad and lentil have comparatively one and a half times more protein than in eggs. If we eat 100 gm ground nut every day, we can get plenty of protein. Use of groundnut in the diet of children can bring wonderful beneficial results.

* Can we not fulfill our protein requirements without poultry-production? Yes, we can. The extensive and scientific research has revealed the fact that poultry-production is not the last resort of human diet. In fact, poultry-industry has given birth to diseases like heart-attack, cancer, paralysis and such other fatal diseases.

Some other facts about eggs

* Shaivas (the worshippers of Lord Shiva) regard an egg to be a symbol of Brahmanda (universe). Therefore, they think that eating egg is sinful. Not only for Shaivas but for Vaishnavas (the worshippers of Lord Vishnu) also, eating eggs is forbidden. In tantric cult also the egg has been called Brahmanda.

* Indian religions and culture are opposed to egg-eating. In Atherwaveda (8.6.12) it has been explicitly said, ‘I destroy those devilish people who eat eggs and flesh.’

* In order to accelerate the process of their maturity, chickens are administered artificial hormones like DES (Diethylstilboestrol). The children whose mothers were given DES, became victims of cancer and other serious diseases. DES has been labeled as a miraculous medicine. It acts as a growth-promotor and adds to the flesh of animals, increasing their weight from the commercial point of view. Attempts have been made in Europe to put a legal ban on it but it is black-marketed and produced in unauthorized laboratories. Consumption of meat of such creatures which have been given DES may cause cancer.

* Hens and chickens having cancerous formation or growth are also sold away without any examination. The purchaser actually buys cancer in the form of such hens and chickens.

* According to the resolution of Advertisement standards council of India, dated 26 may, 1990, egg is not vegetable. To sell it under the name of vegetable is a national and social crime. The Advertisement standards council of India has forced the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) to change the language of their exaggerated advertisement.

* Hens, pigs and calves don’t see the light of the day till they are taken to the slaughter house. A pregnant female pig is continuously kept in an enclosure (for three months) barely larger than her body. Same is true of hens. In fact to reduce their activeness and tension they are kept in darkness. Contrary to this, chickens are deliberately placed in bright light so that they can reach maturity before time. Male-chickens are often killed.

* Mrex (plague of chickens) originates from Herpies Simplex Virus (H.S.V.). According to a recent scientific observation, H.S.V. Type-2 and cervical carcinoma (cancer) found in women are closely related.

* Now-a-days plucking of the feathers of hens is not done manually i.e. with hands. Instead, a sharp machine called scalder is used. It has rubber fingers. Machine holds the chicken or the hen tight and the rubber fingers go on plucking the feathers. It also squeezes and twists them so that the dirt is separated. There is, therefore, every possibility of infection all around. The microbes of various diseases get deposited on the chickens standing by or on the apparatus itself. In one square centimeter of this machine for plucking feathers nearly one million microbes are founded crowded.

* Cows, bullocks, buffaloes and pigs are given medicines to increase their flesh. In poultry-farms also such medicines are being widely used. Chickens and turkey are given mild doses of antibiotics so that they may gain weight and can be commercially exploited. However, no attention is being paid to the evil effects of this on human-race.

* Nutritionists such as Dr. frey Ellis and Prof. J.W.T. Dickerson have made it abundantly clear that the nourishing capability of vegetarian food has been considerably under-estimated and under-values, but if this food is given to human beings directly and without being processed in animals, it certainly adds ten times to its nourishing potentially per acre. For instance, more amino acid is found in soyabean. It is seven times per acre more than in milk, and as compared to eggs, eight times more per acre. Remember that in order to obtain one calory man has to feed an animal with seven calories of vegetable food.

* Animal flesh and factory-farm eggs are serious perversions and safeguarding human beings from their curse has become difficult.

* According to the protection of Birds Act (1954), of the Britain, no bird can be put in cage or an enclosure where it would be unable to spread its wings. Those who violate this law are liable to punishment. Ironically enough this law is not applicable to poultries. This exemption has been granted not on compassionate ground but because of political consideration. In India also because of political pressure, there is likelihood of poultry culture being given the status of agriculture.

* Man’s greed for money has reached such a height that he has started tampering with the bodies of birds and animals. He has started designing bodies with the help of his knowledge of genetics. R.S. Gowe, Director, Animal Research Institute of Agriculture, Canada, has pointed out that such intensive systems of reproduction are being invented that some day it would be possible to reproduce hens and cocks without legs and chickens without feathers. At least six universities in America and Canada are busy in such experiments.

* We have now begun to feel the evil effects of the new culture which the egg-culture has evolved. We are unwillingly accepting the sick, terrific, frightened, cruel some and barbarous life-style of the poultries in our own life. One of the major reasons of the decadence of Indian culture is the growth of poultries and indiscriminate publicity of egg-food.

* The world famous wrestler Prof. Ram Murthy was a pure vegetarian and he defeated many strong-bodied wrestlers whose diet contained eggs, meat and fish. From where could he gain so much strength? How much strength we have depends on our digestive power, nourishing quality of the food we eat and the exercises we take. Prof. Ram Murthy’s life is certainly a corrective to the wrong notion that vegetarian food is not energetic and that only non-vegetarians are strong people.

* Perhaps you do not know that Ridgely Abele who won the world championship of U.S.A. Karate Association is purely a vegetarian. He does not eat egg and yet has created eight national records. We must therefore accept that eggs are energetic and nourishing is only an illusion.

* Estelle Gray and Cheryl Marek who created world-record in bicycle riding were pure vegetarians, they never took eggs.
